Weather: Severe lightning advisory issued for two provinces

The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for the Eastern and Uva provinces and the Polonnaruwa District, warning of thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning until 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 25.

The department warned that temporary localized strong winds could occur during thundershowers and urged the public to take precautions against lightning.

People have been advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid standing under trees or remaining in open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and near water bodies, during thunderstorms.

The public has also been urged to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms, and to stay away from open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.

Residents have been cautioned to watch for fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance. (Newswire)
