Weather : Showers in several districts today

Showers are expected throughout the day in several areas, the Department of Meteorology said, forecasting rainfall across Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in some of these areas.

Several spells of showers are also expected in the Kandy and Anuradhapura districts. After 2:00 p.m., isolated showers or thundershowers may occur in Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in the Kalutara district, the Met Department said.

Fairly strong winds of around 40 km/h are expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, and in the Hambantota, Monaragala and Ampara districts.

Misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara.

Showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee.

Winds will be north-easterly at speeds of 30–40 km/h, increasing to 45–50 km/h at times in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

Sea conditions will be rough at times in these areas, while other sea regions around the island are expected to remain moderate.

The public is advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
