Methwan Wijemanne and Vichinthya Nilaweera-Tehan Wijemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera
In a unique performance, the Wijemanne and Nilaweera brothers stole the limelight by claiming the senior and junior doubles title at the 108th National Tennis Championships, held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
First it was Tehan Wijemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera who made an impact as they defeated the combination of Yasitha de Silva and Dilvan Herath in the Men’s Doubles final 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 in a thrilling three-setter.
This was in fact, a splendid performance from the bottom seeds as they had the satisfaction of overcoming the top seeds and the tournament favourites in a marathon encounter.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, Tehan and Chathurya had the better of the sixth-seed pair of Ransath Peiris and Matheesha Nettasinghe in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Thereafter, following the footsteps of Tehan and Chathurya, their younger brothers – Methwan Wijemanne and Vichinthya Nilaweera – produced a similar performance to clinch the Boys’ Under-18 Doubles title.
The pair lived up to expectations as the top seeds and went on to beat the fourth seed combination of Matheesha Nettasinghe and Ransath Peiris in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, Methwan and Vichinthya defeated the third seeds Anujaya Abeywickrema and Hasal Ahangama 6-4, 6-3.
