Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has declined the invitation of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to a discussion between them on the subject of restructuring of the national debt.
The President sent an invitation to the Opposition Leader on March 7 for a discussion with him on debt restructuring, providing an opportunity for the Opposition Leader to express his views on the matter.
The Opposition Leader has cited in his reply to the President’s invitation that according to his view, the invitation is clearly disingenuous and lacking of faith and therefore, he will not attend the meeting.
The Opposition Leader has furnished a sequence of events that had led to his decision on not attending the meeting with the President for a discussion on national debt restructuring based on the Staff Level Agreement by the Government with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that was reached on September 01, 2022 which obtained Executive Board approval on March 20, 2023.
