A 36-year-old mother of two died after being buried under a mound of earth that collapsed on a shop in Teldeniya Rambukwella area Saturday (4) night due to heavy rains. Police investigations have revealed that only the mother of two children was there when the mound collapsed on the shop located next to the Mahiyanganaya main road in Kandy.
Teldeniya Police said that the deceased Nirmala Ratnayake has a daughter and a son. It is reported that the woman, who had come out with her husband and two children after closing the shop, went back into the shop to pick up something she had forgotten. The earth mound fell on the back of the shop at that moment. Locals have taken great efforts to remove the soil and save the woman by using a backhoe. It had taken them about an hour to find the woman and she had been pronounced dead on admission to the Theldeniya Hospital.
