Woman remanded for snatching three-wheel driver’s necklace

A 23-year-old woman who took a three-wheeler under the pretence of going for a hire, hit the driver on the head with a hammer and tried to steal his one-and-a-half sovereign gold chain, has been arrested by the Alawathugoda Police with the help of local residents.

It has been revealed that the woman, who had boarded the three-wheeler from Ankumbura area, hit the driver three times on the head and forehead in a deserted area.

Police have also received information that the suspect woman married an Army soldier and moved to Anuradhapura area, stole a gold chain of her husband’s sister and pawned it and got money. After the incident, the suspect separated from her husband and came back to live in Ankumbura, Kandy. Police also say that she has achieved national level achievements by lifting weights sometime ago.

While travelling from Ankumbura to Vilanagama, the driver informed that he could not travel further as the three-wheeler was running out of fuel and at that time the woman in the back seat took a hammer from the three-wheeler and hit him on the head and snatched the gold chain and ran away, the driver of the three-wheeler had informed Police.

When the woman was fleeing after snatching the necklace, a group of neighbours caught her after hearing the screams of the driver.
