Worker remittances surge past USD 734m in September 2026

Sri Lanka’s external economy continues to demonstrate robust momentum, anchored by a steady climb in foreign worker remittances through the third quarter. Data released by the Central Bank shows that remittances reached USD 734.4 million or approximately Rs. 242.0 billion, in September 2026, improving upon the USD 695.7 million recorded during the same month the previous year.

This monthly performance contributes to an even stronger cumulative picture for the year. For the first nine months spanning January to September 2026, total worker remittances surged to USD 6,865.4 million—translating to roughly Rs. 2,215.4 billion. This marks a notable expansion compared to the USD 5,811.7 million recorded over the corresponding period in 2025, reflecting an 18.1% year-on-year growth in USD terms and a 27.4% rise in rupee terms. Alongside these vital inflows, steady flows from tourism continue to support the island’s foreign exchange earnings and overall economic stability. (Newswire)
