Worth about Rs. 80 Mn sold for Rs. 40 Mn

A Kurunegala businessman who was driving a 2020 jeep which was illegally imported to Sri Lanka and obtained registration certificates from the Motor Traffic Department based on fake documents was arrested yesterday (12) afternoon in Kurunegala by the officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Task Force based in Walana, Panadura. The Central Anti-Corruption Task Force officers went to Kurunegala as buyers, after information that this jeep, which is worth around Rs.80 million would be sold for Rs.40 million. They arrested the businessman along with the jeep at the car park of a famous textile store.

During the questioning of the businessman, it was revealed that this jeep was smuggled into Sri Lanka and registered by a doctor, a resident of Colombo. The investigation revealed that the doctor had given the car to a vehicle sales businessman in Kurunegala to sell and he had entrusted the car to this businessman to keep.

A senior Police officer said that they are investigating whether this vehicle was brought from Colombo port during the period when the importation of vehicles was prohibited. Police said that two persons who are wanted are absconding.

According to the information received by the Director of the Central Anti-Corruption Task Force, Assistant Superintendent of Police Udaya Kumara, under the leadership of its SOIC Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, Chief Inspector Mahendra, Sergeants Jayalal (428), Wijeratne (409), Ajith (1919) and Constables Balasuriya (7090), Udaya Kumara (84889), Sanjeeva (91287), Sriyantha (94009), Senaratne (104643), Police Constable Driver Asiri (93250) and Silva (105520) involved in this raid.
