Yeheni Kuruppu’s PSA victory sets new heights for Sri Lankan Squash

Sri Lanka’s number two ranked squash player, Yeheni Kuruppu, has achieved a significant milestone for the country by clinching victory at the Bangabandhu 3rd International Squash Tournament 2023, held from September 26-30 in Bangladesh.

Yeheni’s remarkable triumph marked her first overseas Professional Squash Association (PSA) title win, elevating her status as Sri Lanka’s number two national player. In the semi-final, Yeheni secured a commanding three-set victory against a Bangladeshi opponent.

However, the highlight of her journey came in the final, where she faced a world higher-ranked Malaysian player in an intense five-set battle. The match reached a gripping 12-all at one point, but Yeheni ultimately emerged victorious in the final set, securing the coveted trophy and a substantial cash prize.

Yeheni Kuruppu, a versatile athlete who had previously represented Sri Lanka in various badminton tournaments during her early career and an alumna of Visakha Vidyalaya, expressed her joy and satisfaction. “I am over the moon winning my first title overseas. This victory has boosted my confidence and will prove invaluable for my future PSA career,” said Yeheni.

She extended her gratitude to Sri Lanka Squash for their unwavering support throughout her journey. She now looks forward to securing sponsorships for her future successes, considering this victory as a significant stepping stone.
