Young friends washed away in Unawatuna, girl rescued

A school boy and a schoolgirl who were sitting on a rock at Jungle Beach, Unawatuna in Habaraduwa police domain were swept away by the waves on Monday (18).

The girl who has been swept away was rescued by a group of fishermen who are local residents and the boy has gone missing, police said. The Navy, Police and local residents have conducted search operations to find the male student without any success.

The missing boy is a 17-year-old resident of Walahanduwa area in Akmeemana and a prefect studying at a prominent school in Galle, Police said.

The schoolgirl who was rescued was a resident of the Galle area.

The incident has occurred outside school hours and the boy and girl have been wearing casual clothes and not in their school uniforms at the time of the incident.

Habaraduwa Police are conducting further investigations to find the missing schoolboy.
