Sri Lanka’s young shuttlers clinched the gold medal in both Under-17 and Under-15 age groups at the South Asia Regional Junior Badminton Championships held at the National Sports Council in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal yesterday.
Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh 3-2 in the Under-17 final and defeated Nepal 3-0 in the final of Under-15 event.
Ranitma Liyanage, Hiruka Sahanmith Aluth Patabandige, Ranumi Manage and Thidasa Weragoda competed in the under-17 competition, while Senuth Sethmina Perera, Nethmi Amaya Ratnayake, Keneth Arukgoda and Sithuli Ranasinghe competed in the under-15 competition.
Sri Lanka Badminton provided funds to the shuttlers for this tour and juniors did really well to pocket gold medals said Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva.
This is a very good exposure for young shuttlers while they are more focused about future International tournaments and SLB are giving all facilities to young shuttlers. The current National women’s champion Ranithma Liyanage who was a member of Under 17 team really impressed with her performance and SLB is already focused on Ranithma Liyanage for next Olympics.
