Police officers attached to the Fort Police have found cash over Rs 6.9 million when a mini lorry plying on the road near Galle Face was checked by them.
At that time, the driver of the lorry got agitated and tried hard to avoid the police inspection by offering Rs. 500,000 to the police officers as a bribe.
The suspect was arrested and the lorry was searched, but nothing suspicious was found in it. But the police officials have a doubt as to why the driver tried to evade the police checks after giving money.
Fort police OIC and the officers had decided to conduct a thorough inspection of the lorry. They have brought the two sniffer dogs trained to detect explosives and drugs and subjected the lorry to a thorough inspection. First, the vehicle was checked by the police dogs trained in dealing with explosives. As nothing was found there, the official police dog trained in dealing with drugs was deployed.
There, the police managed to find 3400 milligrams of heroin, which was carefully hidden under the driver’s seat, according to the dog’s behavior.
Apart from this heroin, there was nothing suspicious in the lorry. During questioning, the person who was the driver of the car said that he was a wood transporter and not a person related to other illegal traffic.
It has been revealed during the investigations that this driver is a relative of drug baron Makandure Madush’s close associate. The police suspect that this person may be a drug hoarder. Therefore, the Fort Police said that the suspect will be detained for 07 for questioning
