Youth Services officer arrested over alleged bribe for course certificates

An officer attached to the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations of accepting money to issue course certificates to an individual who had not attended the relevant courses.

According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect, Gamini Sarath Kumara, was the officer in charge of the Padiyathalawa Centre of the National Youth Services Council.

The Bribery Commission states that the suspect had initially allegedly obtained Rs. 6,500 from the complainant after issuing two certificates through the Pahala Uva Development Foundation, claiming that the complainant had completed Information Technology and English courses, despite not having attended the courses.

The officer is also accused of subsequently requesting Rs. 4,000 to issue another certificate through the same institution claiming that the complainant had completed a Tamil language course.

CIABOC said the suspect later allegedly requested and obtained Rs. 6,500 to have the Tamil language course certificate issued through the National Youth Services Council.

The suspect was arrested by Bribery Commission officers at around 1.35 pm yesterday (30) at the Padiyathalawa Vocational Training Centre of the National Youth Services Council.

He is due to be produced before the Mahiyanganaya Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
