Sri Lanka Police have launched a special long distance focused traffic operation in certain selected areas as part of its ongoing countrywide special operation ‘Yukthiya’ to curtail drugs, underworld related crimes and other offensive activities.
According to the Police, the special traffic operation will be in effect for one week that commenced from yesterday (5) and will be conducted during this period.
Vehicles, including long distance public transport buses leaving from Colombo to outstations, will be inspected on the Colombo-Kandy Road near the Kelaniya University old building and on the Colombo-Negombo Road near the Oliyamulla School in Negombo.
Another 1,184 suspects have been apprehended during the countrywide special operation ‘Yukthiya’ carried out by the Police and the Special Task Force (STF) between 12.30 am on January 4 till 12.30 am on January 5.
Out of the total of 1,184 suspects that were arrested, further investigations are being conducted on 59 suspects based on detention orders, the Public Security Ministry stated.
A large quantity of different types of drugs was seized from various parts of the country during the raids that were carried in the 24 hour operation.
Police seized 337 grams and 758 mg of heroin, 242 grams and 372 mg of ICE, 6 kg and 629 grams of cannabis, 7,772 cannabis plants, 3 kg and 694 grams of Mawa, 55 grams of Hashish, 01 kg and 226 grams of Kush and 1,221 narcotic pills.
Also, 23 suspects have been investigated for illegal assets and 49 drug addicts have been sent to rehabilitation centres.
Another 93 suspects who were on the list of suspects registered by the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Special Bureau were arrested during this operation.
Over 25,000 suspects have been apprehended in over 23,000 raids conducted by the Police and the Special Task Force (STF) since December 17, 2023 in order to curtail drug and underworld related activities in Sri Lanka.
Police have also recovered a large quantity of narcotics and have also seized several illegally acquired assets, including properties and vehicles, during the multiple raids that have been carried out since the launch of the countrywide special operation.
