Dubai: Dubai plays host to the 30th edition of the Arabian Travel Market, which opened today at the World Trade Centre. The event featured more than 2,000 exhibitors and representatives from over 150 countries in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries. This year, Sri Lanka boasts a record 50 firms present, including many first-time attendees.

According to Sri Lanka Tourism Director of Marketing and Business Development Dushan Weerasooriya the country is targeting the Gulf Arab market, with the aim of reaching beyond Dubai to promote Sri Lanka to the region. Weerasooriya believes the Arabian Travel Market offers the perfect platform to market Sri Lanka to Saudi Arabia, a market that is seeing an upswing in outbound tourism. As the country is not currently holding any roadshows in Saudi Arabia, the Arabian Travel Market presents the ideal opportunity to reach out to the country and promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination.

Weerasooriya said, “Think of this as the much needed launch pad to promote Sri Lanka into the highly lucrative Saudi Arabian travel market.”

The Gulf market is a high-yielding one, with Gulf Arab tourists known for being high spenders who travel with their families. The depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee has increased the buying power of Gulf currency, making Sri Lanka an ideal destination for Gulf tourists. Furthermore, with good air connectivity, travel to Sri Lanka has become easier for Gulf Arab visitors.

The Arabian Travel Market is attracting around 34,000 visitors from across the globe, representing a 27% increase. The event features a wide array of must-attend events, including sessions focused on the key markets of India, China, and the GCC, as well as a new informal speed networking platform. With something to suit every specialism and interest, the event offers unparalleled networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

In addition to the Arabian Travel Market, other events taking place under the auspices of Arabian Travel Week 2023 include the ATM Start-up Competition, ATM Travel Tech, ILTM Arabia, GBTA Business Travel Forums, Buyer Speed Networking, the Influencer Networking Event, the Business Traveller Awards, and the Dubai Food Festival. Arabian Travel Week 2023 runs from Monday 1 May to Wednesday 10 May across Dubai.

With Sri Lanka aiming to tap into the Gulf Arab market, the country’s presence at the Arabian Travel Market is expected to provide a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. The event offers an opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase its attractions and entice Gulf Arab tourists to visit the country. As Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic, events like the Arabian Travel Market are vital in boosting the country’s tourism and reviving its economy.

China, a key source destination for Sri Lanka, shall be taking a notable position in the exhibition. This is following the lifting of COVID-related travel restrictions earlier this year. China was the world’s top source market in 2019, with 155 million tourists spending more than US $250 billion overseas.
