The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has taken action against Member of Parliament (MP) Wimal Weerawansa by issuing an arrest warrant after he failed to attend court proceedings after being summoned. The MP’s absence was related to a case filed concerning a protest that took place in front of the United Nations (UN) Office in 2016.

During the court session today (19 June), the Cinnamon Gardens Police, who had lodged a complaint against MP Wimal Weerawansa and six others, presented their case before the Colombo Chief Magistrate. The court decided to issue an arrest warrant for the MP due to his failure to appear in court.

The charges against the accused individuals, including MP Wimal Weerawansa, are centered on the obstruction of public roads surrounding the UN Compound in Thummulla, Colombo, during the visit of the then-UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Al Hussein, to Sri Lanka in 2016. The protest resulted in significant public inconvenience, prompting legal action.

Alongside MP Wimal Weerawansa, the other accused individuals in this case are Weerakumara Dissanayake, Piyasiri Dissanayake, Mohammed Muzammil, Jayantha Samaraweera, and Roger Seneviratne. All individuals named will be subject to the legal proceedings and are expected to appear before the court to address the charges against them.
