Case filed against Singaporean company seeking compensation

Damages caused to goods by X-Press Pearl and seven others

A case was yesterday filed in the Colombo Commercial High Court against the Singaporean company that owns the X-press Pearl vessel and seven others including its local representative company seeking a compensation over USD 62 million   for the damage caused by the burning of the goods sent by domestic workers and labourers working in the Middle East.

The case has been filed by the cargo service company which covenant to courier the goods to Sri Lanka from the Middle East, seeking compensation for damaged goods packed in six containers, including furniture, which were sent by Domestic workers working in Doha Qatar. The case was taken up before Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Pradeep Hettiarachchi and after considering the circumstances, the notices have been issued to seven respondents including the registered owner of Xpress Pearl Vessel in Singapore, the local representative in this country, the manager of the ship in London, to present their facts before the court on August 10 by the Colombo Commercial High Court Judge.

On the advice of the K.P Law Firm, Senior Attorney-at-Law Malika Gunasekara appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
