Country in calamity, public lives in peril – UNP Chairman

He was addressing the people’s representatives of the Galle district Local Government Institutions and party activists through Zoom technology.

The country has presently drifted towards a national tragedy and people’s existence towards endanger owing to the inability and the inefficiency of the government, he said.

The United National Party has completed 75 years in its political journey. As we observe the dawn of freedom to Sri Lanka we can notice an exceptional link between the Southern Province and the freedom struggle. Matara district played a prominent role in the freedom movement, he stated.

The Temperance Movement commenced in 1917 was a front line organization for the National Independence Movement. On par with that Movement a number of national organizations were formed and prominent national leaders emerged many of whom are connected to the Southern Province. Finally the United National Party was formed in 1946 as an amalgamation of Ceylon National Congress, Temperance Movement and some the organizations with D.S.Senanayake as the first leader of the Party.

A very close companion of D.S.Senananayake was Esmond Wickremesinghe who was the father of Ranil Wickremesinghe. He was a dignified adviser to all Prime Ministers up to J.R.Jayewardene. Today our party at its 75th anniversary is led by the son of that impressive leader. He has special connection to Baddegama in Galle.

The United National Party which was birthed in a very significant juncture of the country’s history has rendered an exceptional service to the nation and the country since its inception.
