The Temperance Movement commenced in 1917 was a front line organization for the National Independence Movement. On par with that Movement a number of national organizations were formed and prominent national leaders emerged many of whom are connected to the Southern Province. Finally the United National Party was formed in 1946 as an amalgamation of Ceylon National Congress, Temperance Movement and some the organizations with D.S.Senanayake as the first leader of the Party.
A very close companion of D.S.Senananayake was Esmond Wickremesinghe who was the father of Ranil Wickremesinghe. He was a dignified adviser to all Prime Ministers up to J.R.Jayewardene.
