EC to announce new date for LG poll before March 9
The Election Commission yesterday announced that the new date for the Local Government Election will be declared before March 9.
Although the commission was to announce the new date for the election yesterday, it was postponed to next week following yesterday’s verdict of the case SC/FRA/69/2023 heard in the Supreme Court relating to the holding of the election.
Accordingly, the final decision on the date of the election will be taken next week following the discussions with the Finance Ministry and other relevant institutions such as the Government Printing Department and the Police Department, the Commission announced.
The Local Government Election, which was scheduled to be held on March 9 will have to be postponed due to several reasons which are not under the control of the Commission, the Election Commission announced on February 24.
A meeting of the commission held on that day had decided to announce the new date of the election by yesterday. However, it was further postponed to next week in order to comply with yesterday’s order of the Supreme Court, the commission pointed out.
The term in office of the councillors of the current Local Government Institutions was to expire on March 19, 2022 and it was extended for another one year period until March 19, this year by the then minister in charge of the Provincial Council and Local Government subject.
