Former national rugby player arrested for robberies
A former player of the national rugby team involved in many gold chain robberies was arrested along with around Rs.4 million worth gold items.
Kaduwela Police said that over 5,400 milligrams of heroin was taken into custody with the suspect.
According to the information received by Kaduwela Police OIC that a suspicious car was parked on Kaduwela Vihara Mawatha, the suspected rugby player was arrested and searched and found 5,400 milligrams of heroin in his possession. Police say that they were able to uncover the details of many gold chain robberies that took place in Welikada police area.
Police say that all the robberies were carried out by the suspect on stolen motorcycles and the Police said that after the robbery, he left the motorcycles behind. Police have found all the stolen gold items that the suspect had sold to gold buyers in Sea Street and Grandpass areas. At the time the gold articles were found, they had been melted down, the Police officer said.
The suspect is a player of a famous Sports Club in Colombo area and in 2003, represented the national rugby team. Police said that since 2007 the suspect was addicted to heroin. The arrested suspect is a resident of Delgoda area.
