Four held for selling Kandy land on forged ID

Officers of the Special Crime Investigation Unit of the Kandy Police have arrested four persons who prepared a fake identity card in the name of the owner of a valuable piece of land near Dharmaraja College, Kandy and sold the land for Rs.4 million pretending to be the owner.

Police said that the real owner of the land in question has given a copy of the deed to a friend with the intention of selling the land and the suspects have prepared a fake ID in the name mentioned in the copy and sold the land to a businessman from the Negombo area. The fake identity card prepared in the name of the owner of the land in question has been submitted to a lawyer and the work has been done to register the land to the new owner and a lawyer’s fee of Rs.280,000 has also been paid for it.

An official who was there at the time of going to register the land informed the lawyer and the person who bought the land on suspicion. The real owner of the land was found during their investigation. At that time, the owner of the land, who did not know that his land had been sold using a fake ID card, filed a complaint with the Special Criminal Investigation Division of the Kandy Police along with the person who bought the land.
