Gold eyes removed from goddess’ statue

Police in Udappuwa said that a thief entered the Sri Wirapadra Kali Amman Kovil in Udappuwa early morning yesterday (14) by breaking the padlocks of an additional door of the temple and fled with more than Rs. 2.5 mn worth of gold necklaces and a large amount of money in the offering box.

It is said that what has been stolen are gold necklaces worth more than 12 gold sovereign pounds, which were worn around the neck of goddess Kali by devotees and the two eyes of goddess Kali made of gold. In addition to that, it has been revealed in the initial police investigations that the thief has broken the offering box where devotees put their offerings and stole a large amount of money.

The police said that CCTV footage shows a thief entering the temple in the early hours yesterday (14) by breaking the padlocks of the small gate on one side of the Kali Kovil.

Udappuwa Sri Virapadra Kali Amman Kovil is located near the Udappuwa beach and it is said that the ancient temple was completely renovated and opened three years ago.

It is said that a large number of people frequently come to Udappuwa Kali Kovil to seek refuge for their problems and most of them are people from Udappuwa village who are currently working in European countries such as Canada, Switzerland and France.
