IT officer’s house burgled in Veyangoda, jewellery worth Rs.8.2 Mn taken

The Veyangoda Police have launched an extensive investigation into the theft of local and foreign currency as well as gold jewellery worth Rs. 8.2 million when burglars had entered a house in Bangalawatte, Marapola by removing the tiles of the roof and breaking  the ceiling of a residence where an IT officer of a renowned company was living.

The theft had taken place on Wednesday (5) when members of the household had gone to attend a wedding.

The officer had complained to the police that jewellery worth Rs.3,580,000, foreign currency worth Rs.4,301,658 and several gemstones valued at Rs.20,000 and other property had been stolen.

Police said the wedding had been of the officer’s wife’s younger sister. A senior police officer of the Veyangoda police said it had been held in a function hall close to the complainant’s home.

The complainant’s mother is engaged in a job in Israel and his brother is due to be married to a young woman who has American citizenship. They too had arrived in this country to attend the wedding.The young woman to be married had arrived together with her mother. Apart from that another woman with British citizenship, a friend of the young woman’s mother had also come. They had left their valuables in the complainant’s house and gone for the wedding. Police said that most of the stolen money and jewellery belonged to them.

Police believe that this theft has been carried out by someone who knew very well that everyone was going to attend the wedding. Accordingly, the police think they will be able to identify the burglars.
