Kandy collects 250 tonnes garbage during Perahera
Kandy Municipal Council’s Waste Management Unit Chief Engineer Namal Dissanayake said that in the 10 days during the Kandy Esala Perahera, about 250 tonnes of garbage was collected from the Kandy city.
He also said that there are about 50 tonnes of solid waste including plastic bottles and polythene. He stated that about 10 tonnes of garbage that the people who came to see the Perahara had been illegally disposed of in the environment and about 15 tonnes of waste including elephant dung and litters from the places where the elephants were kept were collected daily.
He also emphasised that the garbage is being sent to the Gohagoda garbage yard and is being classified for recycling. He lamented that no matter how many times people are informed before the perehera not to dump waste haphazardly, only a few adhere to such messages.
