There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion fell on Islamic State extremists who have stepped up attacks on the Taliban in recent weeks, particularly in an IS stronghold in eastern Afghanistan.
An apparent roadside bomb went off at the gate of the sprawling Eid Gah Mosque in Kabul at a time when a memorial service was being held for the mother of chief Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. Five people were killed, said Qari Saeed Khosti, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry.
Later on Sunday night, Kabul was rocked by more explosions and sustained gunfire, in what appeared to be a Taliban operation against an ISIS cell. Images from the scene posted by local media showed at least two sizeable blasts outside an apartment block.
Meanwhile, 50 days after the Sunni Pashtun terrorist force militarily occupied Kabul, there are no international takers for the Taliban. According to a Kabul watcher, no country wants to take lead in recognising the Taliban regime after all the commitments made and publicly voiced by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar to the Doha process have been thrown out of the window. To add to this, the international community is now blaming the Doha deal makers for human rights abuses in Afghanistan as it was none other than UK CDS Carter who promoted the Taliban by calling them “country boys” and wanted the global community to give them space as the majority of the Taliban boys were born after the 9/11 attacks. “It may be that this Taliban is different Taliban from the one that people remember from the 1990s.”
Meanwhile, the Taliban have created an exclusive battalion of suicide bombers to be deployed at the borders of the country, especially in the Badakhshan province which is at the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, reports said. Deputy governor of the province Mullah Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi said the battalion is named Lashkar-e-Mansoori, or “Mansoor army”. The battalion is the same as the one that would conduct suicide attacks targeting the security forces of the previous Afghan Government, he said.
