Opposition Leader tells IMF to exert pressure on govt

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa called on the International Monetary Fund to exert the necessary pressure on the government to follow sound financial management.

The Opposition Leader made this request delegation led by the International Monetary Fund’s Deputy Management Director Kenji Okamura met with a delegation of Samagi Jana Balavegaya, including the Opposition Leader, at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo on Thursday.

The Opposition Leader explained at length about the emerging economic situation of the country and drew the attention of the delegation, especially to the various sectors that have collapsed in the country. He said that Sri Lanka is facing a difficult situation and asked the IMF delegation to assist Sri Lanka to get out of this situation. Premadasa urged the delegation to exert pressure on the government to follow proper financial management. He further pointed out that the people of the country undergo unbearable pressure and hardship especially due to the increase in income tax.

The Opposition Leader said that Sri Lanka needs time to recover from this situation.The delegation is expected to discuss the recent trends in the country’s economic programme, the opportunities to empower the economy in the future, as well as the methods to minimise obstacles and delays.
