Pick-pocketed father of three commits suicide

Navagamuwa Police say that the body of a father of three who was distraught after being robbed of Rs. 80,000 from his  a purse snatcher had committed suicide and his body was found in Nawagamuwa. The man had lost his purse while going to see his wife and children for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The deceased has been identified as Sarachchandra (58), a father of three and a resident of Baduraliya.

The deceased, was working at a quarry in the Lower Bomiriya area of Navagamuwa. On the fateful day he had received his salary of Rs.35,000 from the owner of the quarry. Altogether, Sarachchandra is said to have had Rs. 80,000 in his possession together with the money he had saved from earlier salaries.

He had left for Baduraliya to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with his wife and three children.

He kept the money in the top pocket of his shirt and when he reached the Grandpass area, he had found that the money was missing.

The Police say that after that he had returned to the quarry, instead of going home.

“He is said to have committed suicide in his room at the quarry,” Police said.
