The raids conducted to search for hoarded stocks of paddy have continued over the past three weeks and over 300,000 kilos of paddy seized from a warehouse in the Galkiriyagama area were also handed over to the Paddy Marketing Board on September 18.
“So far, 50 out of the 73 paddy warehouses inspected in the Anuradhapura District have been sealed so far. Of them, 43 warehouses have been handed over to the Paddy Marketing Board,” a senior Consumer Affairs Authority officer said.
It is also reported that there are about 25 warehouses with more than 50,000 of paddy and about six warehouses with more than 100,000 kilos of paddy among the sealed warehouses.
Meanwhile, during a search operation conducted in Anuradhapura on Sunday, several shops selling sugar and rice at higher prices were detected. These traders have sold Samba rice which is priced at Rs.103 per kilo at Rs. 140 per kilo.
The raids were carried out by a group of officers headed by Senior Investigating Officer B.A.C.P. Perera of the Anuradhapura District Consumer Affairs Authority.
