Special Selection Trial for the World Junior Athletic Championships

Sri Lanka Athletics is expected to conduct a special selection trial on July 25, at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo to select the athletes for World Junior Athletic Championships to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from August 17 to 22.

According to a senior official of the Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) earlier SLA decided to conduct Junior National championship but it is not possible to schedule a date due to the current situation in the country.

However, “Sri Lanka Athletics” is planning to conduct a special selection trial on July 25, at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo As these competitions must be held as per the existing Covid rules, only a select few events will be held, and entry standards of those events are given by SLA.

Meanwhile three promising athletes Thurushi Karunaratne of Walala Ratnayake Central (800m),Shanika Lakshani (Holy Cross Gampaha) 800m and Asian youth championship medalist Isuru Kaushalya Ananda Sasthralaya Matugama ((400m) have already qualified for the world junior Athletic Championship.

All three athletes reached their required qualification standard at the Senior Nationals .SLA expected more than seven athletes for this world junior event.

SLA official also said Applications for the junior selection trial will be issued from July 1, and should be sent to“Secretary, Sri Lanka Athletics,No 33, Torrington Place, Colombo 07” on or before July 15.In addition documents proving the performances of the relevant events should be submitted with the application.
