Sri Lanka spikers for Central Asia Tournament

Sri Lanka could not participate in any international tournament last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and also pulled out from the 21st Asian Men’s and Women’s Tournament at the last minute as most of the National pool spikers were positive for Covid 19 and Dengue fever.

Earlier Sri Lankan men’s team defeated Uzbekistan team at the qualifying game held in Colombo but due to the absence of Sri Lankan team Uzbekistan team got a are chance to compete at the Asian tournament.

In addition Sri Lankan domestic tournaments for 2021 including National championship, President’s Gold Cup, Super league and Mercantile services tournaments also not yet decided to be conducted due to this Global pandemic situation.

Meanwhile (SLVB) also have planned to restart the national volleyball pool targeting the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England and the 2022 Asian Games in China.

The Sports Ministry and the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) have already directed the SLVB to field a Men’s and Women’s beach volleyball team for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games All training activities of the Men’s and Women’s national pool as well as the beach volleyball pool training were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in August last year. An official of the SLVB said the Open Selection Trial will be held in October to select the players for the indoor and beach volleyball pools. (D.R)
