Thirty five suspects netted in special operation

The Police Media Spokesperson’s office said that 35 suspects were arrested in a joint special operation conducted on Sunday (11) by the Borella Police with the support of the Army and the Police Special Task Force. 

The Police had also arrested a person named ‘Junda’ and seized Rs.2.6 million from his possession in the Sinhadupata area of Borella.

The Police Media Spokesman’s Office states that the person was arrested with heroin and the money found is suspected to be earned from heroin trafficking.

The arrested person was once associated with the underworld. Police also say that after the members of a rival underworld gang had tried to kill him he had gone to Dubai and had returned to the country after the underworld criminal who threatened him was killed in a fight with the Police.

The arrested person ‘Junda’ is currently living and running a small grocery shop. The suspect has said that the money found in his possession was to be used to buy cigarettes and other items for the shop.

It is said that the suspect’s son and daughter-in-law are working in Dubai and they are currently in Sri Lanka on vacation. The son had told Police that Rs. 1.2 million of the money seized by the Police belonged to him.

A majority of the suspects arrested in the joint special operation are for the possession of drugs. Several suspects with pending warrants and for weapons possession were also arrested.
