Volleyball star Chathuri Poornima does Tissapura Vidyalaya proud
Sixteen year old Volleyball player and athlete Herath Mudiyanselage Chathuri Poornima Abeyratne has brought honour and fame for her school Tissapura Vidyalaya Ampara. She was born on 22nd April 2005 and she was admitted to Tissapura Vidayalaya in 2011 when B.D.M.Karunarathne was the Principal of the school and her first class teacher was U.G.Nadawathie and Chathuri’s father Sri Lanka Armys H.M.Abeyrathne too is an old boy of Tissapura Vidyalaya and he has taken part in Volleyball during his day and following her father’s footsteps Chathuri too took up to Volleyball and athletics.
Her father played volleyball at school and the very well organized volleyball commenced in 2014 during the Principal ship of M.C.Udaya Kumara.
When Chathuri was in grade three she participated in the Inter House Sports meet and came first in 100 metres and skipping race and second in Long Jump and in the following year at the sports meet she won the 100 metres and her team won the 100 x 4 relay event and in the year 2014 and 2015 they participated in the Provincial Tournament and came first but in the Zonal they came second. At the 2015 Inter House Level she came first in 100 metres and second in Long Jump . Her team participated in the Inter House Elle and Netball Tournaments.
Then in 2016 at the Inter House under 15 age group her house were the Netball champions and her Volleyball Teacher in Charge was Mrs.Varuni Udatiyawala.
In the meantime in 2015 she attended the school Volleyball practices under her coach Indika Pushpakumara and the teacher of in Charge was Mrs. Varuni Udatiyawala and her mother Mrs.Vasantha Kumari encouraged her daughter and in 2016 she got in to the volleyball pool and in 2017 she participated in the Divisional, Zonal, District and Provincial tournaments and their team swept the board in the lower level In the All Island DSI Tournament they were the champions and she captained the team and in the next year they won the lower division tournaments and in the under 15 DSI Tournament they won the trophy.
Same year representing the Super Kings Volleyball Club Ampara in the under 23 tournament they were second and in 2019 DSI All Island under 15 Tournament she was the best player and in the Dialog Gold Cup under 15 tournament they came second and in the National Volleyball open tournament her club emerged third. They in 2020 in the Galaxy Open tournament they could not gain a place.
They were well supported by the Principal the Commander of Civil Defence Unit Ampara and Bank of Ceylon Ampara Branch. Her present Teacher in Charge of Volleyball is Mrs.Subani
