We will not leave without implementing the changes that we have proposed for the betterment of the country, Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said on Tuesday.

Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena expressed these views on the occasion of awarding letters of appointment to a group of drivers and conductors recruited with the approval of the Cabinet to fill vacancies in the Sri Lankan Transport Board (SLTB).

Even though new recruitments to the public sector have been suspended as a matter of policy, it is considered a unique opportunity to offer these appointments as a special need, paying special attention to the importance of continuing the services of the SLTB, which is designated as an essential service, the Minister said.

“We are not able to carry out capital expenditure from now on by borrowing domestically and from abroad as almost every government that was in power in the past did. Politicians do not have solutions to the current financial crisis. Only employees and employers who work in the respective institutions can provide solutions to that. We should make these institutions profitable and fraud, corruption, and irregularities should be stopped,” he said.

“We are living in an era where knowledge is becoming capital. It is essential to be equipped with technical knowledge for a better tomorrow. Professionals with technical knowledge will be in high demand in the future world. As a major solution to the shortage of foreign exchange in the country, the youth should be brought forward as trained workers equipped with knowledge of IT. We should allow our children to do what our generation could not do. While the world has reached a state where all activities are done using artificial intelligence, we should also go for that digitization,” Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.

“For that, we are taking the necessary steps to introduce a smart card for quick train travel and bus travel and an e-ticketing system for seat reservation in trains and buses,” the Minister said.

“Modern technological methods of public transport like that used in developed countries should be introduced to our country. We will not hesitate to take necessary disciplinary action against anyone who obstructs it,” he said.
