Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a video circulated on social media that allegedly shows a woman being forcibly stripped, Police Media Division said.
The main suspect, a 43-year-old businessman from the Fairfield area in Borella, was arrested on Jan. 18 while hiding at a hotel in Hikkaduwa police said. Two additional suspects, aged 44 and 55 and residents of the Eheliyagoda area, were also taken into custody on charges of aiding and abetting the main suspect and concealing evidence.
According to the Children and Women Abuse Prevention and Investigation Division, the video surfaced on social media platforms in recent days, prompting an investigation under the direction of the deputy inspector general of police in charge of the division.
Police said the main suspect allegedly stripped a woman employed as a domestic worker at his residence in the presence of several individuals, recorded the incident on video and later shared the footage on social media, including WhatsApp groups.
Police said details of the case were presented before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which issued an order barring the main suspect from foreign travel while investigations continue. Police said the suspect had evaded arrest following the incident and stayed at several hotels. (Newswire)
