10% increase in Lankans employed abroad in September 2024 over September 2023
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) stated that the departure of Sri Lankans for foreign employment in September 2024 has increased by 10 percent compared to September 2023.
In September 2024, a total of 28,344 Sri Lankans left for foreign jobs, compared to 25,716 in September 2023.
In the first nine months of 2024, a total of 240,109 Sri Lankans were employed abroad, including 99,939 female workers and 142,170 male workers.
During this period, 70,396 skilled workers were employed abroad, including 62,177 male workers and 8,219 female workers. In the first nine months of 2024, a total of 17,649 workers have gone abroad for professional jobs, while the number of Sri Lankans who have gone for semi-skilled jobs is 3,704.
In the first nine months of 2024, the largest number of Sri Lankans have gone to Saudi Arabia for work, and the number is 38,133. During this period, 6,391 Sri Lankans left for work in Israel, and another 6,295 Sri Lankans left for work in Japan.
Also, 5,870 have left for jobs in South Korea, 5,677 to Kuwait, and 3995 to the United Arab Emirates, during the same period.
