100 smart classrooms for schools in Homagama Education Zone

An awareness programme was held at the Homagama Maha Vidyalaya about the project to establish 100 smart classrooms in 100 schools in the Homagama educational zone under the ‘Warnodaya Smart School Project’ a concept of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana.

Principals of 37 schools in Homagama region, teaching staff representatives and school development society representatives participated in this programme held under the patronage of Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana. Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation is to provide the necessary equipment sets to the schools and according to this, an amount of 700,000 rupees is going to be allocated to each school to establish classrooms equipped with facilities such as smart boards, laptop computers, and internet connections etc.

The Minister speaking at the event said. “Some are engaged in a media show that pretends the main problem in a school is the lack of a smart classroom. In over 10,000 schools in Sri Lanka, one classroom is not enough to provide a digitalised education. Therefore, a massive digitisation project was implemented with a private company under a loan from the Chinese government. During this year, the task of building a complete school system required for digital education will become a pragmatic reality in the next few months. Until then, under the efforts of the Western Provincial Council, we have taken steps to establish a smart classroom in schools belonging to the Homagama Education Zone, with the support of the government and well-wishers and the parents. We have handed over the responsibility of providing the necessary equipment to the State Trading Corporation in a transparent manner. Accordingly, the opportunity to get the highest quality equipment at the lowest possible cost is available”.

Homagama Zonal Education Director Hemantha Gamage, Planning Director Amila Widana Gamage, Secretary of Homagama PS, principals of schools proposed to implement the project, teaching representatives, officials of school development societies and parents were present for this event.
