2,500 Bhikkunis in Sri Lanka now

The 30th Higher Ordination of Sri Lanka Bhikkuni Sasana Bala Mandalaya ended yesterday

completing the number of Bhikkunis to receive the higher ordination to 2,500.

Twenty novice Bhikkunis received higher ordination at the historical Rangiri Dambulu Sangha Sabha Seemamalakaya.

Ven.Kotmale Siri Sumedha Bhikshuni, Chief Registrar of Bhikshuni Shasana Bala Mandalaya, said that two nuns who work as teachers and one nun who completed their university education received higher ordination.

The 30th Upsampada of Bhikku Sasana was held under the patronage of Mahanayake of Siyam Maha Nikaya Rangiri Dambulu Parshavaya Most Ven Inamaluwe Sri Sumangala Thera. Ven.Kotmale Siri Sumedha Bhikshuni said that the Bhikkuni Sasana in the country has 2,500 higher ordained bhikkunis around the country and there are over 4000 Bhikkunis too.

The Bhikkuni pointed out to him that there are currently two most serious problems in the Bhikshunini Balamandalalaya and that the government has not been paying attention to these two problems for nearly two decades.

The Bhikkuni said that the government has not paid attention on issuing an ID card to the Bhikkunis nor nunneries are registered.
