The second phase of the programme of providing free kerosene to one day fishing vessels under the assistance of the Republic of China began on October 12 from Beruwala fishing harbour premises.
The second phase of kerosene distribution took place under the Guidance of Fisheries State Minister Piyal Nishantha de Silva.
This fuel allowance will be available to nearly 28,000 fishermen across the island. In this manner, one fisherman can get 153 litres of kerosene for free. State Minister Silva who spoke on this occasion, said that this subsidy is provided by the Chinese government. “Through this programme, we are distributing approximately 4,250,000 litres of kerosene in the second phase. In this second phase, more than 450 one-day fishing vessels will receive this allowance in Kalutara district alone,” he added.
The State Minister gave special thanks to the Chinese government for assisting the local fishermen. He further said that this programme is implemented more effectively and transparently.
This fuel donation received in the form of diesel, has been converted into kerosene according to the request made by one-day fishing boat owners. This subsidy from the Chinese government, no doubt will be a great relief to the fishermen who are badly affected with the high cost of fuel.
Beruwala Divisional Secretary Ranjan P. Perera, Fisheries Department Assistant Director Chamila Kahandawala, Beruwala Fishery Port Manager Eranga Edward Dayamal and others participated in this event.
