Benefit of the rupee strengthening passed on to the public

The electricity tariff will be deducted by a significant amount with effect from midnight today (5). Accordingly, the overall electricity tariff deduction will be 21.9 percent.

Significantly, the largest tariff reduction has been given to the Religious and other welfare categories amounting to 32.8 percent.

Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Prof. Manjula Fernando said that the proposal and cost data presented by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) were closely studied and reviewed in accordance with the provisions of the Sri Lanka Electricity Board Act and the PUCSL when reaching a final decision regarding the revision of electricity tariffs.

Accordingly, electricity tariff of almost all categories will be reduced by significant amounts. The PUCSL announced yesterday that the electricity tariff revision will bring immense relief to all categories including the Domestic Purpose category.

PUCSL Chairman Prof. Fernando said that the unit price of a household using less than 30 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 8 from Rs. 12, while the unit price of a household using 31 to 60 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 20 from Rs. 30.

The unit price of a household using 61 to 90 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 30 from Rs. 41 and the unit price of a household using 91 to 120 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 50 from Rs. 59. The unit price of a household using 121 to 180 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 50 from Rs. 59, while the unit price of a household using more than 180 units per month will be decreased to Rs. 75 from Rs. 89.

Accordingly, the overall tariff deduction of the Domestic Purpose category will be 24.1 percent, while the overall tariff deduction of the General Purpose category will be 22.7 percent. Meanwhile, the overall tariff deduction of the Government category will be 22.4 percent, whilst the overall tariff deduction of the Hotel category will be 17.5 percent.

The tariff deduction of the Industrial purpose will be 18.1 percent. Meanwhile the electricity tariff of street lamps will also be reduced and the percentage will be 19.6.
