Police lifesaving units rescued four foreign nationals from drowning in two separate sea incidents at Hikkaduwa on Friday, police said.

In the first incident, a 42-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 14-year-old son were swept away by strong currents while bathing at the Pannamgoda beach area in the Hikkaduwa police division on Friday afternoon. Officers attached to the Hikkaduwa Police Lifesaving Unit on duty at the beach rescued the pair and provided first aid.

Later the same day, two more foreign nationals — a 33-year-old Russian man and a 67-year-old British national — were rescued after being caught in rough seas while swimming at Narigama beach. Lifeguards on duty intervened and brought both individuals safely ashore before administering first aid.

Police said all four victims escaped without serious injuries due to the timely action of the lifesaving officers. (Newswire)
