Barber robbed of over Rs. 1.1 Mn: Police search for woman, accomplice

The Matara Police has commenced an investigation regarding the robbery of over Rs. 1.1 million in cash and property, by a woman who went to a hotel room with a barber whom he had met at Pigeon Island, Matara. The 47-year-old barber, a resident of Thalaramba, Kamburupitiya had met the 25-year-old woman a few weeks ago at Pigeon Island in Matara.

Police said that there had been an exchange of phone numbers between the two. Police said that the woman had been in constant touch with the barber by phone and they were involved in a love affair. The barber had come to Matara from Kamburupitiya on the woman’s request on March 18. He had taken the young woman on his motorbike to a hotel near the Matara bus stand.

Police said that the couple were involved in intimate relations and the woman had asked the man for a ganja cigar to smoke.

The barber had asked her whether she knew anyone from whom he could buy a ganja cigar and according to the Police, she had then made a phone call and brought down someone she said she knew to the hotel. The barber had been asked to go with the man and buy a ganja cigar.

Police said that accordingly, the barber had taken the person on his motorbike and gone to Matara Eliyakanda beach based on directions given by this individual. The Police said that the individual had then hit the barber on the head with a glass bottle. Then the person had stolen the bracelet worn by the barber worth Rs.450,000, the mobile phone worth Rs. 34,100, a watch worth Rs.6,000 and the motorbike worth Rs.650,000 and fled.

The barber had lodged a complaint with the Matara Police on Sunday (19). Subsequent investigations conducted by the Matara Police revealed that the woman who went to the hotel room with the barber is a hardcore drug addict and she had robbed the barber according to a plan. Police said that the person who robbed the barber is her assistant and both of them use drugs together.
