A drunken motorcyclist who was arrested on Saturday (8) night by a group of officers of the Wanduramba Police while trying to escape after hitting a police three-wheeler, has attacked the police officers and escaped in handcuffs.
A police constable who was injured in the attack by the motorcyclist has been admitted to the Galle Karapitiya Hospital for treatment.
The police say that his wife and daughter, who came to the spot when the motorcyclist was arrested, hung on the police officers and allowed the suspect to escape.
A 48-year-old mother and a 16-year-old daughter who are residents of Wanduramba Deiyanndara have been arrested for obstructing the police.
Police Sergeant Sarath Wickremaratne and Constables Ashoka and Kanishka had been engaged in night mobile security duty, day before yesterday (8) in the three-wheeler belonging to Wanduramba Police Station bearing number WP-ABV-2654.
At around 10.00 pm, the motorcycle bearing number SP-BDR-8615 had collided with the police three-wheeler at Deiyanndara Wathurakade junction. Police said that the motorcyclist was arrested while trying to escape and that he was drunk at that time.
The suspect’s house was located nearby. Police said that his wife and daughter had come to the place after hearing the suspect shouting. Police had put handcuffs on one of the suspect’s hands, at the time, and the suspect had then attacked the police officers and run away. A constable was injured in the assault.
The suspect’s wife and daughter had hung on to the police officers so that they could not pursue the fleeing suspect and arrest him. Police said the two were arrested on the charge of aiding and abetting the escape of a suspect.
Wanduramba Police stated that investigations are being conducted to arrest the absconding suspect.
