CB Governors’ decision to default on the foreign debt conspiratorial – NPP

NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament that there is a connection between the IMF loan and the CB Governors’ decision to default on the foreign debt.

He said that it was a conspiratorial decision.Speaking in Parliament yesterday during the debate on the IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement, he said that NPP would vote against the IMF EFF agreement as the government did not reveal any negotiations made with the IMF to Parliament until the final agreement was signed.

MP Dissanayake also said that many professionals’ salaries have gone negative due to government taxes. The MP further said that the Governor of the Central Bank, took a decision not to pay the debt even though the money had been allocated from the budget on April 12 last year, without the consent of Parliament.There is a clear connection between that decision and the International Monetary Fund. This is a conspiratorial decision. We requested to report to Parliament what kind of agreements and what kind of discussions are going on related to IMF. But no steps were taken to report anything to Parliament until a final agreement was concluded. Especially the President and the government had a responsibility to disclose everything if they directly affect the nation. That didn’t happen either. However, they come and ask us for our vote finally. It is not fair.
