The Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal yesterday (29) that it has been revealed, the Chinese national who was recently arrested by the Immigration and Emigration Department with two foreign passports at the airport is a person against whom the Chinese authorities have issued an arrest warrant on drug charges.
Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara who appeared for the Attorney General informed this when a Writ Petition filed by Attorney-at-Law Ashoka Wijewardena requesting to issue an order to prevent the extradition of the Chinese national to China was taken up in courts.
Sanjeewa Jayawardena PC who appeared for the petitioner, sought permission to withdraw the petition as he did not intend to maintain it any longer.
Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara who appeared for the Attorney General stated that the Chinese Government has issued a warrant for the arrest of this Chinese national on drug charges and the Attorney General has received documents to that effect.
It was stated in the petition that the Chinese national had injuries on his body and he had mentioned that the injuries were caused by the beatings by the officers of the Immigration and Emigration Department after his arrest in Sri Lanka.
However, it was revealed before the court that the medical report of the suspect states that those injuries were self inflicted.
After considering the facts, the court allowed the request to withdraw the petition and also decided to dismiss the writ petition.
The Chinese national had submitted this petition requesting that an order be issued to deport him to Dubai instead of deporting him to China.
