Monk arrested over businessman’s abduction in Dematagoda

The Dematagoda Police has arrested a monk who allegedly went to a private financial institution in Dematagoda,  kidnapped its owner and forcibly took his passport and the deed of his house. The suspect Thera is a chief incumbent of a temple located in the Dodanduwa area.

The Dematagoda Police say that a police special task force sergeant and a constable who are said to have assisted in the kidnapping are to be arrested.

The Dematagoda Police stated that the cab used for the kidnapping also belonged to the Special Task Force. The owner of this private financial institution is a 38-year-old resident of Makola. A senior police officer stated that there are allegations of financial fraud against him. He is said to have accepted deposits from individuals promising a high interest rate but has defaulted payments for some of the customers.

It is said that the Thera had deposited money in this institution expecting a higher interest. However, it is said that the owner of this institution had failed to pay the Thera’s money.

It is the businessman who had lodged a complaint with the police saying that he had been abducted.

However, the STF has denied allegations against its officers. They have also stated that the businessman has made a false complaint regarding an alleged abduction after he failed to pay the Thera’s money. The police are investigating.
