In a significant development for Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector, Safe Power International Pvt Ltd signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to build and operate Alankuda 10 MW wind power project in the Kalpitiya Peninsula near Alankuda closer to Norochchlai, a region known for its favorable wind conditions.

The USD 10 million plus project aims to harness the abundant wind resources of the area to generate clean and sustainable electricity for the nation.

The signing of the PPA signifies a major milestone in the collaboration between Safe Power International Pvt Ltd and CEB, as it solidifies their partnership in advancing the renewable energy goals of Sri Lanka. Under the agreement, Safe Power International will sell the electricity generated by the Alankuda wind farm to CEB for a period of 20 years.

The proposed 10MW wind farm is expected to have a construction timeline of one and a half years. During this period, state-of-the-art wind turbines will be installed, and necessary infrastructure will be developed to ensure a seamless integration into the national power grid. Once completed, the wind power plant will have the capacity to produce more than 36 GWh (Gigawatt Hours) of clean energy annually contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The partnership between Safe Power International and CEB not only highlights their commitment to sustainable development but also showcases the growing importance of renewable energy in Sri Lanka in line with the Climate Prosperity Plan (CPP). By harnessing the power of wind, this project aims to diversify the country’s energy mix and promote a greener and more sustainable future and is expected to offset more than 1,160,000 metric tons of C02 emission over the life of the project.

The Alankuda 10MW wind farm is anticipated to have a positive impact on the local economy as well. During the construction phase, it will create job opportunities and stimulate growth in the Kalpitiya area. Additionally, the project will contribute to enhancing Sri Lanka’s energy security by diversifying its power generation sources.
