The Kankesanturai Police have arrested 22 people who stole a stock of iron worth about Rs. 15 million that was piled up in the currently closed Kankesanturai cement factory in Jaffna and have taken steps to present them before the Jaffna court.
According to a complaint made to the police by an officer of the cement factory, an investigation was conducted by the police and the suspects were arrested.
The iron stolen by them had been sold to a foreign businessman and the police have started an investigation in that regard.
Sri Lanka Cement Corporation Chairman Jagath Dharmapriya says that so far, thieves have stolen more than Rs. 220 million worth of iron from the cement factory.
Due to the lack of security provided to the cement factory and due to the high market value for scrap iron these days, the theft of iron has increased in the closed part of the cement factory.
