Borella Police arrested 19 students of Zahira College and one student’s brother on Friday (11) for attempting to assault a group of students of Wesley College following a dispute after an inter-school football tournament held at the Wellawatta Cooray Stadium.
Among them, there were ten minor students and they were provided Police bail after calling their parents over to the Police station.
The other nine students and the brother of one student have been produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court. Police said that they were released on Rs.100,000 bail.
Police said that the final football match was held between Zahira College and Wesley College last Monday (7) and Zahira College had won that game. After the game, there was an argument between the students of the two schools. At that time, a group of residents of apartments near the stadium came to the stadium and attacked the school students and their parents. In this attack, 10 students and parents were injured and hospitalised.
The Wellawatta Police, who investigated the attack, arrested five. As an extension of that incident, Borella Police says that 20 including 19 students of Zahira College, have come to attack the students of Wesley College.
Immediately after receiving information about this, a police team arrested all the 20 Zahira suspects who came to attack the Wesley College students.
All of them now released on bail.
