Kirindiwela Police took into custody three persons and the car which they hijacked from a businessman, within a few hours of the crime being committed.
The 32-year-old businessman, a resident of Avissawella, was driving near Bogahawatte junction, when he was overtaken and his path blocked. Two persons had got out of the car in front and approached the businessman. They had dragged him out of his car and assaulted him. The assailants had retrieved Rs 190,000 from the cabin of the businessman’s car, dumped the businessman on the side of the road and made off with his car.
The robbery had taken place on the Radawana road in the Kirindiwela Police division.
As soon as the robbery was reported to the police around 1.30 pm, Police had immediately launched investigations and, by 6.00 pm, arrested the suspects, who are residents of Henegama and Radawana, along with the hijacked car.According to Police, the businessman had rented the stolen car.
Investigations revealed that the person who rented the car to this businessman, had ‘contracted’ the suspects to hijack the car, due to non-payment of rent for the car.
Police investigations are continuing to arrest the contractor in this regard.
