Kekira Magistrate yesterday released, on a surety bail of Rs.500,000, the female lawyer who allegedly removed two documents from the Court safe, tore and chewed them. The Kekirawa Police were also ordered to submit a progress report of their investigations on this incident, to Court on November 1.
Police had earlier arrested the lawyer following a complaint by the Court staff, who had videotaped the entire incident.
The lawyer allegedly tried to chew and swallow the original documents related to a case being heard against her in the Kekirawa District Court, as she had allegedly prepared false documents pertaining to the ownership of the room housing her office near the Kekirawa Court Complex.
Another lawyer had been renting a room for a long time, in her office opposite the Kekirawa Court, owned by a senior lawyer working at the Kekirawa Court. Although the owner of this room had been asking for its return, for sometime, the lady lawyer had refused to vacate the place. Hence, the room owner had filed a case in the Kekirawa District Court.
At that time, the female lawyer occupying the room, had submitted two fraudulent documents by forging his signature on a letterhead of the lawyer, stating that he had sold it to her for Rs. 2 million.
The senior lawyer had informed Court that the said signatures were not his own and hence, should be verified.
In compliance with a Court order, the signature was sent to the Government Analyst’s office for verification. Meanwhile, at the time of the investigation, the Court had said that the manner in which this case had been filed was flawed and the aggrieved party had withdrawn the case.
Meanwhile, the Court had received the Government Analyst’s report regarding the signatures, confirming they did not match and hence, were forgeries.
As soon as this reports arrived, the aggrieved party had obtained copies of the original documents. When the female lawyer realised that a case was being filed against her regarding the preparation of false documents, she had gone to the registry office, with the Court registrar’s authorization for the release of these two documents. When she took possession of the documents she had torn the two documents, put them in her mouth and started chewing. The Court staff, who recorded this entire incident, complained to the Kekirawa police, who arrived there and arrested the lawyer, while she was chewing the document.
Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of the Kekirawa Police OIC, Chief Inspector M.A.L.S. Munasinghe.
